Better than D-Link Omna? Uniden APP Cam solo + Review

Not so long ago, Uniden sent over their APP Camera Solo + for me to test out and compare to D-Link’s wirefree offering, Their Omna cameras. So over the past couple of weeks i have tested them and compared them with D-Link to give you this review!

Special thanks to Uniden for sending this out for review!

Design and First Impressions

The design of the APP Cam Solo + is a bit of an odd one, it kind of looks like a baby monitor. But anyway, it is made from a white plastic, it has a speaker and microphone on the front to communicate with whom ever is outside your house. On the side is also a Micro-SD card slot. Overall it feels pretty solid.

On the back is the battery which can be swapped out easily, compared to the OMNA cameras by D-Link where you can’t remove the battery.

Included in the box is the camera itself, a black silicone cover, magnetic mount, arm mount, a mounting strap to mount it to a tree or pole, some screws and documentation.

A bit more on Uniden’s arm mount, it has a much better design than the D-Link one, the d-link one you have to mount straight to the wall, but the Uniden one comes with a separate mounting plate to mount it to the wall.

So all you have to do is screw in the plate to the wall and slot the arm onto the plate.

Features

  • Full HD 1080p
  • Completely wire free
  • Quick swap rechargeable battery
  • Solar power compatible
  • Up to 180 days standby time
  • Thermo Sense technology
  • Cloud & SD card compatible
  • Smart home ready
  • 130 degrees wide viewing angle
  • Two-way talk
  • Night vision up to 10m

It also works with google assistant, you can tell it to do a range of things like record.

It features Uniden’s Thermo Sense technology which users heat sensors to detect motion instead of the traditional PIR sensor which will set off a motion detect for the smallest of things.

The App Cam Solo + Can last up to 3 months on a single charge, i have not tested this as i haven’t had it with me long enough but i assume it would be somewhat accurate.

Setup and Software

The Uniden App Cam Solo + is really easy to setup, just scan the QR code in the app, plug the battery in and begin setup. Setup is finished in about 5 minutes without even having to use a hub like the D-Link ones which makes adding more cameras a lot easier.

The software is intuitive and easy to use and has a much bigger camera limit than the OMNA at only four.

The Uniden App Cam Solo + also has the ability to record to a Micro-SD Card without the need of WiFi, although, WiFi is needed for the initial setup. Or you can take up on Uniden’s Cloud storage to record straight to the cloud with 14 days storage.

Another really cool feature about the App Cam Solo + is that it can be used with Solar Panel that Uniden sells, this means you will never* have to take it off the wall or roof to charge it.

Video Quality

The Uniden App Cam Solo + records at 1080p, so rest assured that you will be able to see all the itty-bitty details like number plates or faces.

The video quality is really clear with only a little bit of noise at night time, which is to be expected.

Conclusion

I enjoyed my time with the App Cam Solo +, it is a great option for homes and small businesses. It outperformed the D-Link OMNA in most categories.

Do i recommend them? Yes, a big yes.
