Everyday our homes and lives are becoming more and more connected, having an intuitive way to control these new devices is imperative so that you don’t get overwhelmed with the different apps and softwares. Well one of the best ways to control these devices is with an Amazon Echo. Just say ‘Hey Alexa’ and you’re on your way. Today I’m going to be looking at the Echo Show 8, an Echo with a screen and camera!

Big thanks to Amazon for sending this out for review!

What’s in the Box?

Included in the box of the Echo Show 8 is the Echo Show itself wrapped nicely in a cardboard enclosure. You also get an AC Power adapter and some documentation about getting started and warranty.

Design and Features

For my unit, Amazon sent over their white version of the Echo Show 8 but it also does come in a charcoal version if that suits you more.

As the name suggests, this is Amazon’s 8 inch version of their Echo Show with the Echo Show 5 being a 5.5 inch and so on. The Echo Show 8 is actually a lot more compact than I had anticipated coming in at only about 13cm tall and 10cm deep. This makes it really good for sitting on something like the kitchen bench for recipes or on your desk to help you throughout your day.

Moving around the Echo Show 8 on the front you will find that really nice 8 inch display. One issue with the display on the Echo Show 8 is sometimes it was a little unresponsive but other than that Amazon has used a really solid display. Just above from this is the main camera for the smart display. It’s nothing award winning at only 1MP but does have a privacy cover for those who are privacy conscious.

On the top of the Echo Show 8 is where you will find all the physical controls for the display. Here are the buttons that you will find going left to right. The Mute button which will stop Alexa being triggered by voice. Down from this are the volume up and down buttons but this can also be controlled via the app.

And right down the end is the little switch to open and close the camera’s privacy shutter. There’s nothing new here. Apart from the shutter this is the same set of controls you will find on most Echo devices.

Round the back of the Echo Show 8 is the main connectivity of the device with the DC barrel jack, Micro USB port and 3.5mm Audio jack.

One cool thing that you can buy extra is a stand for the Echo Show 8 which gives you more versatility in how the display sits.

Now to point out the elephant in the room. That massive grill strapped to the back of the Echo Show 8. This is what houses the two 52mm 10W speakers that the Echo Show 8. I’ll go into more detail about this further down.

Entertainment for every part of your day

The Amazon Echo Show 8 allows you to link multiple different streaming/entertainment services to let you catch up on your favourite TV or listen to today’s news. Prime Video comes preloaded on the Echo Show 8 but you can link things like 7 Plus and FOX sports if you’re in Australia. Me personally, I just linked my Spotify to listen to music as I have the Echo Show 8 in my bedroom.

More ways to control your privacy

Alexa and Echo devices are built with multiple layers of privacy protection. From the microphone/camera off button and built-in shutter to the ability to delete your voice recordings, you have transparency and control over your Alexa experience.

Voice Control your Smart Home and Security

This is one the best reasons to pick up any Alexa device but especially an Echo Show. Asking Alexa to do things like turn the lights on, change the temperature or show you who is at the front door is great. You can set up different rooms in the groups so that each device in a room won’t interfere with other rooms. You can even link your smart vacuum to it and ask Alexa to tell the vacuum to start cleaning.

4 Microphones

The Echo Show 8 comes with 4 omnidirectional microphones built in so that Alexa can hear you no matter where you are in the room. No shouting needed

Auto Night Mode

The Echo Show 8 will automatically detect the light levels in the room and go into night mode where it dims the screen and has a very dim clock and temperature on the screen.

Get Alexa to set an Alarm

For example If you need to get up at say, 8am, it’s no problem with Alexa. Just say “Alexa set an alarm at 8am” and you will be awoken by her. In addition to all this You can even get her to tell you the weather and traffic alerts after the alarm.

Set Up Alexa’s Routines

Alexa can perform a range of routine tasks just by saying the prompt for it. One example is “Alexa, Goodnight” Then Alexa will perform a range of tasks like dimming the lights and shutting the curtains. But it doesn’t stop here, you can easily add more routines by going into the Alexa app.

Alexa’s skills are some of the most used services with Alexa, you can do so many things with the over 100,000 different available skills. Enabling skills is easy via the Alexa app, just go into the app and click on skills and search for the one you want to use.

Setting up the Amazon Echo Show 8 is really easy. Just plug it in and go through the on screen steps, add your WiFi, login and away you go. Use the same Amazon credentials in the Alexa app and you have a fully functioning smart display. It’s really that easy!

Mobile App

The Alexa app is an essential part of using and configuring your Alexa device. From the app you can do things like add devices, control groups, enable skills, choose default streaming services and so much more. The app is really easy to use and operate with everything you need right in front of you. No stupid hidden menus that take ages to find. The app can be downloaded from both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

The Amazon Echo Show 8 works really well as a either a recipe finder and video watching tool for the kitchen while preparing food or as something to sit on your bedside table. It works flawlessly without a hitch and 9/10 times Alexa always responds properly with the occasional hiccup because she couldn’t hear me properly. The speakers sound good but aren’t going to blow you away. However, If you want a really good sounding Alexa speaker I recommend picking up the Echo Studio which I reviewed here.

The Amazon Echo Show 8 can be found on Amazon Australia for $159. Not a bad asking price for an Alexa enabled smart display!

The Amazon Echo Show 8 is a really handy piece of tech for the kitchen, bedside or desk. It allows you to have a huge range of control over many piece of smart tech and also entertains you with it’s wide range of available services.
