AMD Ryzen 7 3800X Review | A Gaming Powerhouse

It’s that time of the year again! I am building a new PC! For this new PC, it’s going to be based around the idea of streaming. Which of course you need a pretty powerful system to do. So when I approached AMD about providing a CPU for the build they said yes! The build isn’t quite ready yet. But I thought I would bring you a review of the heart of the system, the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X.

Massive thanks to AMD for sending this out for review and the PC Build!

What’s in the Box?

The box for the Ryzen 7 3800X is basically the same as every other Ryzen box. It has the AMD and Ryzen logo on the front as well as the number to identify which series processor it is. Included in the box is the CPU itself, an AMD Wraith Prism RGB cooler and some basic documentation for warranty etc.

One thing that I really like AMD doing is including a pretty decent cooler in the box. It’s not going to break any records or let you do any overclocking. But it will do as a basic cooler if you aren’t doing anything too heavy with the CPU. Unlike some other CPU brand that doesn’t think it’s necessary to include a CPU cooler in the box.

Design and Features

Design wise there really isn’t any physical difference between this and any of the other Ryzen CPUs. One thing I will touch on is that this is still an AM4 CPU meaning that if you have an older B450 board or other. The CPU will still work and AM4 is supposed to be the CPU socket that the next generation of Ryzen will be using. Unlike Intel’s latest offering where you have to go and buy a whole new motherboard just to upgrade your CPU. If you’re coming from Zen 1, you can use your old motherboard with this new CPU!

Features

I covered the really nitty gritty details of the new Ryzen 3000 Series changes and benefits in my review of the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X. So if you want to know some of the new features and benefits of ZEN 2, go and check out that review here. But in short.

The biggest and most important development compared to previous generations of Ryzen CPUs is the increase in IPC (Instructions per Clock). AMD has been able to increase 3rd Gen Ryzen’s IPC by 15% giving it a massive performance boost in single threaded applications compared to the last generation of Ryzen CPUs.

Another big milestone for AMD is bringing 7nm processors to the consumers hands with 3rd Gen Ryzen. By using 7nm Cores inside the ‘Chiplets’ AMD was able to cram a massive amount of L2 and L3 cache into these new CPUs.

Specs

Performance

The AMD Ryzen 7 3800X is a real beast of a CPU when it comes to gaming! I’m not going to divulge into any details as they will be coming in some future separate articles but damn is this a good gaming CPU! For now you can look at the below benchmarks for some insight!

Benchmarks

Pricing

The AMD Ryzen 7 3800X can be found online at retailers like Mwave for only $609! Not bad for the performance that it offers!

Conclusion

As you can see from the above, the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X is a really powerful CPU. Even compared to the big guns like the Intel 10900K or Ryzen 9 3900X. In the coming weeks, I’m going to be posting some articles going over the gaming and streaming performance of the 3800X so keep an eye out for that!
