In terms of PC Cases there are literally thousands of different models to pick from, there really isn’t a right or wrong answer it really does come down to personal preference. Obviously the better the case the more expensive it is going to be but just because a case is cheap doesn’t mean it’s going to be bad. In this review I’m going to be taking a look at one of Be Quiet’s more affordable options, the Be Quiet Pure Base 500.
Big thanks to Be Quiet for sending this over for review!
What’s in the Box?
Before we get to what’s in the box, let’s talk about the box itself. The box that the Pure Base 500 comes shipped in is a pretty standard looking brown cardboard box. It has some info about the case on the box like the size and specifications. The box itself is quite sturdy and uses pretty solid cardboard to protect the case during shipping along with some very solid foam on the top and bottom of the case to also help protect it during shipping.
Included in the box is the Pure Base 500 Case itself, a User Manual, dust filter for the top fans, and an accessories box that contains things like the screws you will need and some cable ties to help with cable management.
Design and Features
The model I chose is the Gun Metal Grey with a Tempered Glass Window though there are a few different models of which we will get into later.
The design of the Pure Base 500 is awesome, the Gun Metal Grey looks amazing! The front is plastic with a brushed aluminum look to it and ventilation on the sides and a small Be Quiet logo towards the bottom. I really like how the edges of the front are angled, and it’s not just a big chunk of metal. On both sides of the front are holes to bring fresh air through the front fans or radiator.
Moving around the case, at the top you will find the I/O for the case which includes two USB 3.0 ports, a power button with in-built HDD activity light, 3.5mm mic and headphone jacks. It’s awesome to see both of the audio jacks as a lot of cheap and expensive cases have gone to the combo jack, but I still like to see the two separate ones as it gives you more flexibility with what you can use.
The Be Quiet! Pure Base 500 can come with a range of different panels in different colours. The one that I picked was the Gun Metal Grey with a tempered glass side panel. (What a lovely reflection of me! Shh I’m not a photographer!)
The tempered glass panel is a full sheet of glass with a grey outline to help keep fingerprints off the glass when moving it around and also to help hide the edges of the interior of the case.
The glass is held sits on 4 little posts and is held in by 4 thumbscrews, one on each corner. Another added bonus is that these screws weren’t tightened to the high heavens from the factory. I cannot stand when thumbscrews require a screwdriver to undo for the first time!
Going around to the rear side panel, the one on this model is a standard metal side panel with some sound proofing on the inside to help with noise cancellation. This side panel is held in with the standard two thumbscrews at the rear of the case.
Moving right around to the rear of the case is where you will find the 7 expansion slots with their covers held in by thumbscrews.
The way that the PSU mounts in this case is my favorite mounting system, all you have to do is take the plate off the case with the two thumbscrews, mount the PSU and slide the PSU in! This is so easy and efficient. Still speaking about the power supply. The PSU area has a bottom mounted removable dust filter to give the power supply all the fresh air that it needs.
Now finally, to the top of the case where the two 140mm fans mounts are. Here is where you can find the already installed panel that covers the two fan mounts. If you don’t like the look of this or if you need more airflow the Pure Base 500 also comes with a magnetic dust filter to put here instead.
The interior of the Be Quiet! Pure Base 500 is really well laid out, you have ample room for cooling with water cooling support. Multiple ways to mount different sized storage devices.
Pre installed in the interior are two of Be Quiet!’s Pure Wings 2 140mm fans to keep your PC cool during gaming. Although if you are putting some serious hardware in here I would recommend you add some more fans for even more airflow. In terms of water cooling support there is room in the front for up to a 360mm radiator and up to a 240mm rad in the top.
The Be Quiet! Pure Base 500 also comes with a pre installed power supply shield with a geometric style grill on there for it your PSU comes with some sweet RGB you can still show it off.
As for motherboard compatibility. The Be Quiet Pure Base 500 can fit up to a standard ATX motherboard and already has the standoffs installed for convenience!
The Be Quiet! Pure Base 500 has a range of different mounting points for both 2.5” and 3.5” drives with a double HDD cage underneath the PSU shroud which fits two 3.5” drives or 1 2.5” drive with ease. Behind the motherboard tray you can find another two 2.5” drive mounts to hide those SSDs. But what if you have a flashy RGB SSD? Well Be Quiet! Have you covered here too! With another two 2.5” drive mounts on the SSD panel in the interior of the case to prominently mount those SSDs.
The cable management in the Be Quiet! Pure Base 500 is really well done, there is a lot of room underneath the PSU shroud to hide those cables and if necessary you could also remove the HDD cage if you wish. Behind the motherboard tray there is also a plethora of tie down points for cable ties and also 4 included velcro straps to tie down those bulky cables going up the side.
The cable management system also continues into the interior with the SSD panel providing a neat way to hide those 24pin ATX cables and side mounted SATA cables.
Dust Filtration and Noise Reduction
On the Be Quiet! Pure Base 500, all air intakes are covered with a removal dust filter to keep dust out of your system. Even for a cheaper case this is great to see as effective and easy clean dust filters are basically a must for any system.
In terms of noise reduction. I did touch on this slightly before with the rear side panel having some insulation on it to help keep things quiet. The metal top cover also has an insulation layer on it so unless you need the extra airflow. I would recommend you have this one on to help keep things quiet.
The HDD cage also has rubber screw holes to keep the HDD vibrations from travelling up through the case and making a racket.
If you wanted even more noise reduction you could choose not to get the glass side panel. And instead go for another insulated side panel and if you wanted to go even further you could go with rubber fan mounts instead of screws.
The Be Quiet! Pure Base 500 can be found online for around $125 AUD.
The Be Quiet! Pure Base 500 is a really good value for money case. It offers a lot of great features that are found in high end chassis. It has great cable management and plenty of room on the inside. Although it doesn’t have any integrated RGB which for some is a must it does offer great qualities everywhere else. The only downside is the airflow through the front grills, it’s not horrible but it’s not the best. But Be Quiet! Have recently launched their Pure Base 500DX which is meant to have better airflow. Overall it’s a fantastic case, big props to Be Quiet on this one!
Keep an eye out for a build coming in this case soon!
