A little while ago, my good friends over at Brother asked if I wanted to check out their DS-940DW Mobile Scanner. I was happy to take a look at it and I must say, I am impressed by what this little guy can do.

Big thanks to Brother for sending this out for review!

As per the reviews lately, I am working on redoing my photography area so some of the photos in this review aren’t up to my normal standard. I apologize for any inconvenience.

What’s in the Box?

What do you get in the box? You get the DS-940DW Scanner itself, a USB cable and some documentation. That’s it! Nothing too complicated.

Design and Features

Moving on to the design critique. The first thing I want to note is how compact this is for a duplex scanner. It really does fit in the palm of your hand!

Going around the scanner you will find the main controls on the right hand side of the unit. This is where you will find the main power button, start/stop button, single or double sided selector and colour/mono selector. All of the settings are nicely displayed on a little screen with LED indicator lights to let you know which setting you are on and the battery status.

Moving around to the side of the scanner is where the storage selector and WPS button is. These allow you to change between SD Card, USB connected to PC and WiFi. And the WPS button allows you to directly connect to your WiFi without any confusing configuration.

Now going round the back is where you will find the Micro SD Card slot for the Brother DS-940DW. Do note that an SD card is not included in the box but you can find them pretty cheap both online and in store.

And finally, you have the feed area where you feed in the paper, card or whatever you want to be scanned. I really like the handy slider with icons to give you some guidance depending on this size of thing that you are scanning.

One of the coolest parts of the scanner is the little paper stop that can be flipped up which sends the scanned paper back over the top of the scanner. This is awesome to help keep to that compact feel by having the scanner completely against a wall with no issues whatsoever.

My Take on the Brother DS-940DW’s Design

Overall I really like the simplicity of the scanner, having everything right there in front of you and not needing an app to make it work is great. Apps are awesome, don’t get me wrong. But needing an app to get basic things done that could easily have a physical button really annoys me.

I’m also a big fan of the overall design of the DS-940DW. It’s really compact and looks quite nice and elegant. It fits easily into a bag to take it on the go and even has a 1,200 mAh battery to make it super portable.

  • Lightweight, compact portable document scanner
  • Up to 15ppm scan speed with double-sided (duplex) scanning
  • Built-in 1,200 mAh battery
  • Achieve optimum performance with TWAIN, WIA, ICA, SANE drivers
  • Wi-Fi network and USB connectivity
  • Easily scan A4 documents, receipts and ID cards

Software time! The Brother DS-940DW can be used with either your smartphone or via a PC/Mac. Having the software gives you a wide range of settings and post processing abilities. The app for either your Android or IOS device is quite robust. It allows you to scan straight to your phone, which presumably is what most will be using this for. It gives you options to email, text or message completed scans. This is great for the time that we are in with working from home, having a quick way to send documents back to your workplace is quite important.

The Brother DS-940DW can be found online for around AUD $260 from places like Mwave. It’s a little steep but you are getting a great portable scanner with a range of features.
