GIGABYTE AORUS 5 GAMING LAPTOP REVIEW

GIGABYTE AORUS 5 Gaming Laptop Review

A little while ago, GIGABYTE AORUS reached out to see if I was interested in doing a review of their AORUS 5 Gaming Laptop. I haven’t covered a whole lot of laptop content here so I thought this would be a good way to expand my laptop reviews.

Big thanks to GIGABYTE for sending this over for review

What’s in the Box?

The AORUS 5 Gaming laptop comes in a pretty plain looking cardboard box. It has some cool designs on it with the GIGABYTE AORUS Logo and the Laptop name AORUS 5.

Opening the box will reveal the laptop encased in a protective dust bag to keep it from being scratched and prevent dust buildup while being stored away.

Included with the AORUS 5 is the laptop itself, an AC Power Adapter, Warranty card and quickstart guide and some screws to upgrade the internal storage/

Design and Features

Design wise the AORUS 5 is a really nice and sleek looking laptop, the keyboard is a full sized keyboard which means it includes the numpad. This is a feature I really like to see in laptops these days. On the top of the main body is where you will also find the fancy looking power button to power the laptop on.

I forgot to take a photo of it, but there is also a 720p webcam on the top bezel of the screen for things like skype calls. It’s alright but don’t be expecting to stream with this webcam.

The keyboard is RGB to satisfy your RGB needs and has a white/translucent ring around each key to give an amazing glowing look in the dark.

The trackpad is not centred and is placed more towards to left, it is a perfect size and feels really nice to use and also takes use of the Windows Precision Drivers which is great to see. It is wider than it is tall but this really isn’t much of an issue as most people will probably use a seperate mouse anyhow. The tracking of the trackpad is also great, It’s very accurate and I saw no delay or dead zones while using it.

Spinning the unit around will reveal the angled slits which direct your eyes straight to the AORUS logo.

Also found at the rear of the laptop is the exhaust for the laptop cooling. With high performance parts like the ones in the AORUS 5 it is imperative that they are cooled properly for longevity and for performance so that you don’t get any thermal throttling.

Connectivity

In terms of ports the AORUS 5 actually has pretty good IO in terms of laptops in 2019/2020.

On the left it has a kensington lock, Gigabit LAN, 1 USB 3.1 Gen1 Type A (I HATE the new USB standard names!), a 3.5mm combo audio jack and a full sized SD card reader. This makes this a pretty good option for content creators on the go. Also this is where all the activity lights for things like networking and hard drive activity.

Moving over to the right you will find, a USB 3.1 Gen1 Type A port, a USB 3.1 Gen2 Type C port that supports Display Port 1.2 and HDMI 1.4, next is a full sized HDMI 2.0 port and finally you have the barrel charger port.

Software

In terms of software for the AORUS 5, to control all the lights and a lot of the AORUS products you will need to download the AORUS Control Centre which will allow you to do things like change the RGB lighting on the keyboard, change the fan speed, keep an eye on your temps and put the laptop into ‘gaming’ mode which disables buttons like the Windows key to stop accidental presses while gaming.
