MSI OPTIX MPG341CQR Review | A Beautiful & High Performance Ultrawide!

I’ve been wanting to review an MSI Monitor for a while now. So a couple of weeks ago I reached out to MSI to see if I could review one of their monitors, they didn’t have the particular one I was interested in available. Instead they offered the MSI OPTIX MPG341CQR which is a 144hz, 1440p, Ultrawide gaming monitor with RGB!

Big thanks to MSI for sending this over for review!

What’s in the Box?

I had a few dramas in the beginning of this review and completely forgot to snap some pics of the box so no box pics.

With that out of the way, here’s what’s in the box.

You get the panel itself, two stand pieces, the stand screws, a power cable, vesa mount screws, a USB cable and some documentation. It does say on the MSI site that you should also get a webcam cradle and mouse bungee but I didn’t receive either. My guess is because this is a loan unit and it was lost somewhere in a different review.

The monitor is really well packaged and is surrounded by styrofoam to protect it during shipping, the panel itself is also wrapped in a soft cover to stop the screen from getting scratched.

Design and Features

This is a beautiful monitor! MSI has done a great job coming up with the design of the MPG341CQR. On the front of the monitor, the only bezel that you will find is at the bottom. It’s fully black and follows right to the edges of the monitor, this is what houses the RGB lighting and the built in webcam.

To the right of the webcam is the rose gold MSI logo which looks so subtle yet so sleek! The whole monitor actually follows this rose gold theme with a rose gold section on the stand and back of the monitor.

Round the back you will find more RGB lighting hidden in a gloss back feature section. At night this illuminates up the wall and looks really incredible.

MSI OPTIX MPG341CQR Stand

The included stand is quite adequate to hold up the MPG341CQR, it is quite heavy weighing in at almost 10KG! The monitor does come packed with a set of vesa mount screws so you can use a 3rd party mount if you wish. The stand offers good height adjustment and swivel. It obviously doesn’t have any tilt as who would want to turn this vertically? One thing I didn’t really like about the stand is that it has to be screwed in. I really prefer the monitors where the stand just clicks together in a matter of seconds.

The stand also has some slots in it to help with cable managing the power and display cables.

Overall the design of the monitor and stand is incredible, the amount of attention to detail in the monitor is amazing. The monitor truly is a beautiful piece of tech. To be honest I’m kind of sad to have to part with it. But that’s business and I wouldn’t be where I am today without these sorts of reviews.

Features

Where do I even begin!? Here’s a bullet point list if you just want a brief idea but further down are the features in more detail.

  • Curved Gaming display (1800R) – The best gameplay immersion.
  • UWQHD High Resolution – Game titles will even look better, displaying more details due to the UWQHD resolution.
  • GameSense – Conductively enables external game alerts via RGB LED lighting with the hottest competitive online games.
  • 144Hz Refresh Rate – The real smooth gaming.
  • 1ms response time – eliminate screen tearing and choppy frame rates.
  • HDR 400 – Stunning Visuals with the Most Criterion Format.
  • Mystic Light – The ultimate gaming finish.
  • Night Vision – Get the jump on enemies before they even notice you.
  • Gaming OSD App – Create the ultimate viewing settings for your game.
  • Adaptive Sync – prevent screen tearing.
  • Frameless design – Ultimate gameplay experience.
  • 178° wide view angle.

1800R Curve

Curved gaming monitors are great. I used to use one for my main gaming monitor, but now that I do more work than gaming I went back to a regular panel. Having a curved monitor helps make your gaming experience more immersive by bringing the game into your peripheral vision.

144Hz Refresh Rate

If you have never played a game at above 60Hz. You’re in for a real treat when moving up to 144Hz. Having a higher refresh rate is proven to give you the upper hand in fast moving games like CSGO or Overwatch where every second counts against your enemies. Having a high refresh rate also makes the game look a lot smoother while running because the game is able to update the image on screen a lot faster than on a 60Hz monitor.

Certified HDR 400

By using HDR, the monitor is able to produce images with more details, wider range of colours, and look more similar to what is seen by the human eye when compared to traditional monitors.

Adaptive Sync

Adaptive sync is an amazing technology that can make your game run buttery smooth. It works by syncing the monitor’s refresh rate with the refresh rate of the GPU. For instance, if you’re rendering a game at 70FPS, with adaptive sync the monitor will display it at 70Hz. This is really important to stop screen tearing as it arises from a desync issue between the monitor and GPU. It happens when the monitor is set at a specific refresh rate, say 60Hz and your GPU produces a frame before the monitor refreshes, the monitor will then display part of that frame and the next which creates a tear in the image.

Specs

Software and OSD

The MSI OPTIX MPG351CQR is an RGB monitor. That has to be controlled somewhere, right? Yep, it is all controlled via MSI’s Mystic Light software. Just connect the monitor to your PC via the included USB cable, download the software and you’re on your way to customizing the monitor to fit your setup. You can also use Mystic Light to synchronize the lights with ingame stats so that you can easily see vital stats in the blink of an eye!

The monitor is also paired with MSI’s Gaming OSD software for windows which lets you change all the monitor settings from a nice piece of software instead of the traditional analog menu. Personally I still used the analog menu but some may prefer the software.

Performance

During my tests I found the MSI OPTIX MPG342CQR to perform really well. It products bright and vibrant colours out of the box and does really well playing HDR games and media. I used Lagom’s tests to see how the monitor held up in a range of tests and I must say. I’m impressed.

The sharpness tests went down flawlessly with all the edges being very visible and no blurring or frining. With the black and white testing the MPG341CQR performed exactly as it should with the blackest tile being hard to distinguish.

With the saturation test I did find the monitor to be slightly over saturated with the last two tiles being extremely hard to see.

Moving onto the gradient test the monitor passed with flying colours having no banding visible whatsoever.

Using the EIZO Test pattern the monitor did exceptionally well. The circle had a very sharp outline and there was no visible banding in any of the colours.

Finally the last test was the infamous TestUFO Ghosting test. The MPG341CQR performed decently well. I did notice a little bit of ghosting but it wasn’t too bad compared to other monitors that I have tested.

Pricing

The MSI OPTIX MPG341CQR can be found online for around $1579 AUD. A really good asking price for a 1440p, 144Hz, Ultrawide gaming monitor with HDR!

Conclusion

The MSI OPTIX MPG341CQR is a beautifully designed and great performance monitor. During all my tests it held up really well. It produces some absolutely incredible pictures in HDR compatible games and media and is 144Hz. It ticks basically every box that you could ask for in an Ultrawide gaming monitor. If you’re on the lookout for a new gaming monitor and want a high performance ultrawide gaming monitor I definitely recommend picking up this one!
