Noctua NH-U12S.chromax Review | Overview & Benchmarks

So sometimes I get a little but busy and am late on getting a review done, and this is one of those ones…anyhow.A little while ago, Noctua released their new lineup of Chromax coolers. A completely black variant of some of their best selling coolers; The NH-U12S, NH-D15 and NH-L9i. When Noctua asked if I wanted to test out any of the new coolers I jumped straight into getting the NH-U12S and the NH-D15 which I have already reviewed here. I did not however opt to review the Nh-L9i, but I might do in the future if it’s something you would be interested in seeing. Let me know by getting in touch over on the contact page!

Big thanks to Noctua for sending this out for review!

What’s in the Box?

Upon opening the box your new Noctua NH-U12S you will be greeted with..yet another box, But this box actually contains all the accessories that you will need to actually mount and well use the cooler, this includes the Intel and AMD mounting hardware, NT-H1 Thermal compound, a screwdriver, extra fans mounts, a case badge, one low noise adapter, 4 black extra rubber fan mounts (Orange if you got the limited edition LTT model) and some instructions ,which are for losers…please don’t throw these away, you need them to know how to mount the cooler!

Upon removing the next piece of cardboard underneath this is the pièce de résistance, the NH-U12S itself!

So that’s it for what’s in the box. Onto the next part!

Design and Features

The design of the NH-U12S.Chromax.Black is completely the same as the regular NH-U12S except for one big thing, This one’s black! But for those who haven’t seen either, here’s a run down.

On the top of the cooler is where you will find the Noctua Logo and the ends of the 5 copper heatpipes (yes 5!).

Moving down the cooler is the included 120mm fan, Noctua’s NF-F12 PWM chromax.black to be exact.

All the way down to the base of the cooler is completely black, even the washers on the screws are black! Obviously the very bottom is not covered as it’s nickel.

Features

Award-winning NH-U12S cooler

The original NH-U12S design has won countless awards over the years and has been recommended in over 200 international magazines and websites making it a world renowned CPU cooler!

Chromax.Black Design

The NH-U12S chromax.black is black from head to toe: Featuring a black coated heatsink, black fans with black anti-vibration-pads, black fan clips and black mounting parts giving it a gorgeous sleek look that will blend into any build.

100% RAM compatibility

Thanks to how slim Noctua was able to make the NH-U12S, it will not overhang any ram slots even with two fans thanks to the way that the fans can be mounted on the NH-U12S. If you need more clearance, just move the fans up a couple notches, Easy!

Classic 120mm tower size for excellent overall compatibility

With the NH-U12S only standing 158mm tall it is plenty short enough to fit into most standard cases without a hassle. And only being 125mm wide, the NH-U12S will not overhang the PCIe slots giving you plenty clearance for your GPU. These guys thought of everything!

PWM support and Low-Noise Adaptors

The NF-F12 fans come included with low noise adapters as well as being supported by PWM. You can get nearly silent cooling with the NH-U12S and it only gets a little loud on full load.

SecuFirm2 multi-socket mounting system

Noctua’s New SecuFirm mounting system gives you a great range of supported CPU sockets, meaning you can install the NH-U12S on basically any CPU from this decade and before. The SecuFirm system also makes it super easy to install and gives just the right amount of pressure and thermal paste spread.

Soldered interface between heatpipes and fins

With many heatsinks, the fins are press-fitted to the heatpipes. Due to the different thermal expansion coefficients of copper and aluminium, this fit can loosen over years of thermal cycling, which may lead to reduced performance. By contrast, the NH-U12S’s fins are soldered to the heatpipes in order to guarantee a superior thermal interface that doesn’t deteriorate even after many years of usage.-Noctua

Installation

The installation of the NH-U12S is super easy. Just mount the back plate, screw on the CPU brackets around the socket and mount the cooler, PLEASE, don’t forget thermal paste.

While I didn’t personally film an installation video, Noctua has one that shows how to mount the NH-U12A really well. In the future I do plan on filming installation guides.

Fans

The fan included with the NH-U12S is Noctua’s award winning NF-F12 PWM Fan.

  • It have a max RPM of 1500 RPM
  • A Max RPM with the low noise adapters of 1200 RPM
  • Their minimum RPM is 300 RPM
  • A Max air flow of 93.4 cubic meters per hour and with the L.N.A’s a max of 74.3 cubic meters of air per hour.

Compatibility

The NH-U12S is compatible with basically every modern* CPU socket under the sun from LGA 2011 to FM1. Thanks to Noctua’s new SecuFirm mounting system. Just follow the simple to read instructions for your specific CPU.
