Plantronics RIG 800LX Review

There’s no doubt that the world is moving to a more wireless life, everyday we see more and more devices having their cords cut for a wireless version and over the past few years we’ve seen more and more wireless headsets coming into market. Today I’ll be taking a look at an offering from Plantronics, the RIG 800LX Gaming Headset.

Big thanks to RIG for sending this out for review!

What’s in the Box?

RIG 800LX Box Front

I’ll start off with the packaging, the box that the RIG 800LX comes is really detailed and really catches your eye. The sides and back are packed with info like specs and all you need to know about Dolby Atmos.

When you open the box and pull out the cardboard you will be greeted with the headset and the receiver, the headset is secured nicely to the plastic using velcro stripds around the headband. Included with the headset is the USB receiver, a USB-A to Micro-USB cable for charging and some documentation.

The receiver that comes in the box is nice and small and has a pretty long cable attached to it so that you can plug it into the back of either your PC or XBOX. It has only a single pairing button on the top with a RIG logo also placed on the top.

RIG 800LX Receiver

I am a really big fan of the design of RIG headsets, after owning a few myself I have come to love the sharp angular designs that Plantronics use. As on all RIG headsets, you have the option to move the ear cups up and down using the three notches on the headset with the ear cups just snapping in.

On the left earcup are the knobs for volume and game chat balance, a power switch, and a Micro-USB port for charging, while the right cup packs an EQ mode switch on the underside.

Also on the left side is the boom mic which is really flexible and mutes as soon as you flip it up and unmutes only when it’s down in front of your mouth.

At first it can be a little difficult to find your way around the headset while gaming to turn turn the volume up and down but after a little while I easily got the hang of it and was able to do it on the fly.

Comfort

RIG headsets are renowned for their comfort and lightweight headsets and the RIG 800LX is no different. It is super light and has soft squishy ear cushions with a very breathable mesh, they don’t push on or feel tight against your head while wearing them, even with glasses on. The headband is also really plush and conforms to your head without adding an pressure. I was fully able to wear this headset for hours without any pressure or soreness!

RIG 800LX Performance

To put it in one word: Awesome!

The RIG 800LX produces some truly amazing sound while gaming, with it’s 40mm drivers and the use of Dolby Atmos you get a super immersive gaming experience. In games like Red Dead Redemption 2 you feel like you are actually in the game and this will give you a competitive standing in games like Fortnite or Overwatch by having the ability to hear enemy footsteps around you.

The audio is rich and clear with booming bass, and by using the EQ you can adjust the headset depending on the game you are playing to give you an ever better experience.

The microphone on the other hand isn’t too crash hot, it does the job for multiplayer games but don’t expect to have your audience raving if you plan on using this for something like streaming or let’s plays.

Battery Life

Plantronics states that the battery on the RIG 800LX will last up to 24 Hours before you need to charge it. I charged the headset to 100% once and used the headset on and off for about a week without getting a low battery warning.

Pricing

The Plantronics RIG 800LX goes for around $230 AUD online, For the sound quality and the features that you get this really is not a bad asking price!

Conclusion

What a great headset! I really liked trying out the RIG 800LX, it has incredible audio performance and has Dolby Atmos included! The Bass is rumbly but not too booming and overall the sound is just awesome! So if you’re looking for a new wireless gaming headset that offers great audio and comfort with Dolby Atmos, I highly recommend the Plantronics RIG 800LX!
