Perfect Switch for the Home Office | QNAP QSW-308-1C Review

These days, Almost everything can be or is connected to the internet through either WiFi or a wired connection. We are becoming more and more connected everyday. But have you ever wondered where all those wires go? Well it’s most likely a network switch. The ones in the data centres are much bigger and more powerful than anything I will ever get my hands on, But In today’s review I’m taking a look at a much smaller version of what you would find in a data centre, a home office network switch. The QNAP QSW-308-1C which is a 10 Gigabit capable switch to keep your home office connected.

What’s in the Box?

QNAP QSW-308-1C and Box

What comes in the box with the QNAP QSW-308-1C? Well you get the switch itself, an AC power adapter, and some documentation to help you get started.

Design and Features

The first thing that you would notice with the QNAP QSW-308-1C is that it is quite modern and sleek looking with the body of the unit being completely white. You may also notice that there are two different finishes to the QSW-308-1C a glossy side and a matte side, this is actually for a reason. The matte side is for the 1 Gigabit Rj45 ports and the glossy is for the 10 Gigabit SFP+/Rj45 ports. Speaking of the ports, there are a total of 12, 8 Gigabit ports and 4 10 Gigabit ports but only 3 are usable as the last SFP+ and Rj45 are combined.

One really cool feature of the QSW-308-1C is the power cable, the actual DC connector is recessed and uses a special swivelling connector to one make it look tidier on a desk but as well as easy cable management, This is a really cool feature!

Performance

Performance wise, the QNAP QSW-308-1C does exactly what it says it will do. Transferring files between my PC and NAS was super quick by connecting my PC to the 10G Rj45 port and the nas to one of the SFP+ ports.

The switch gave me noticeably faster transfer speeds and I was able to see transfer speeds of up to around 1 Gigabyte per second! Watching 4K video over the 10G was a breeze and even over 1G it streamed the video without any buffering.

I connected multiple devices to the Switch at once and started transferring multiple files between devices and noticed a slight drop in performance but nothing too drastic.

The switch gave me no problems whatsoever and worked flawlessly. Setting it up is super easy as it isn’t a managed switch so all you have to do is literally plug everything in and you’re good to go.

The QNAP QSW-308-1C can be found on Amazon Australia for around $300 AUD.
