Steelseries Rival 3 Review | A $69 Steal!

A little while ago, Steelseries released a whole lineup of budget friendly gaming peripherals for those who want the flashy looks but are a bit hard for cash. In this review, I’ll be taking a look at the Rival 3 by Steelseries. A $69 AUD RGB Gaming mouse!

Big thanks to Steelseries for sending this out for review!

What’s in the Box?

Included in the box of the Rival 3 is the mouse itself, some documentation. That’s about it, no mess, no fuss; just the basics. The box itself is pretty plain too, it has some basic info about the mouse and shows an IGN rating at the top. But remember, Steelseries had to cut costs wherever doable to keep the price as low as possible.

Design and Features

Before reading any further, do keep in mind that this is a budget gaming mouse so don’t expect huge premium features and superb build quality.

The Steelseries Rival 3 is made entirely out of a matte black plastic all round. It is pretty lightweight weighing in at only 77g without the cable. So if you prefer heavier mice, sorry you’re out of luck here.

It has an ergonomic right handed design and is pretty comfortable in the hand. I’ve used other cheap mice where the plastic is really hard and uncomfortable to use so perks to Steelseries on this!

The plastic used on the mouse is a little cheap and light feeling but that is to be expected at this kind of price range. Remember this is marketed at a starting point for gamers.

On the left hand thumb grip is where you will find two reprogrammable buttons but they do come standard as forward and back in things like a web browser. Which personally I keep as I like having these.

The cable on the mouse is made out of rubber and is super bendy unlike other cheap mice where the manufacturer uses a dirt cheap PVC cable.

RGB, RGB, RGB!! It’s the craze these days and yep. Even the $69 gaming mouse has RGB. There are two zones of lighting, the Steelseries logo at the back of the mouse and an ‘strip’ of RGB around the sides and rear of the mouse. These can both be customized in the Steelseries software which i will go more into later on.

Features

TrueMove Core Sensor

Enjoy true 1-to-1 tracking in a lightweight sensor designed specifically for Rival 3. With a range from 100 to 8,500 CPI (counts per inch).

Crazy bright RGB lights

For the Rival 3, Steelseries used the brightest RGBs in any mouse they’ve made so far. Seriously, don’t look directly at them for too long. They measured around 750 lux.

Comfortable & Durable Design

Steelseries used a durable matte finish for the Rival 3. Its right-handed ergonomic body is also light at 77g. It should be able to withstand most of the abuse gamers throw at it.

  • Five on-board CPI profiles
  • 60M click switch durability (the same switches as the Rival 650)
  • SteelSeries Engine customization

Specs

Performance

Well it looks nice, has good specs and features on paper. But how does it perform in a real world environment? Well in a word, Great! The tracking on the Rival 3 is superb and doesn’t have any deadzone or skipping and keeps up really well without any drag. All which is common in some other cheap gaming mice. I think once you get your CPI/DPI set the way you want, the Rival 3 works really well.

Software

The Steelseries Rival 3 can be customized with the use of Steelseries’ Steelseries Engine 3 Software. Here you can do things like change what the programmable buttons do, CPI, polling rate and of course the RGB. The software is easy and intuitive to use, no stupid hidden menus or confusing layouts to confuse you. It just works!

Pricing

The Steelseries Rival 3 comes in at $69 AUD and $40 USD. An absolutely great value gaming mouse!

Conclusion

The Steelseries Rival 3 is a great value gaming mouse for those who want to dip their feet into the world of PC gaming or just want a great RGB mouse on the cheap. Don’t let the price tag put you off buying this. The Rival 3 is a great gaming mouse and offers a plethora of features for a great value!
